Teaching Notes:
History of university athletics
Despite a long and honourable tradition of boxing at universities, the Olympics, and other amateur events, the rise of professional boxing and prizefighting, along with its uncomfortable history of racism, lower-class immigrants and working-class heroes, did not fit with American myth of a natural aristocracy representing the educated elite, whose toughness and team-player attributes were connoted by college football. As a result, it is very unlikely that a documentary such as this would ever be made in the United States, let alone a college sports drama about boxers rather than football players — even though American college boxing is very much alive, with the United States Intercollegiate Boxing Association featuring both men's and women's events.
